Negative Space

Negative Space is a collaborative sound and movement installation that addresses both the bounds of a delineated performance space and an incessantly shifting sonic environment. A unique movement lexicon developed by dancer and choreographer Jakki Kalogridis privileges the “empty” spaces as much as the physical bodies inhabiting it. Sound design by composer Kerrith Livengood is played through multiple speakers pointing in towards the performers, each one generating a unique series of sounds with which dancers are able to interact. The movement material provides a framework for real-time exploration of both the spatial and auditory, and the durational work allows viewers to curate their own experience based on their pace and perspective as they move around the outside of the piece.

This work can be presented in the following ways:

  • As a site-specific durational work performed by touring dancers

  • As a site-specific durational work performed by local dancers who learn the score during a 5-day residency

  • As a workshop in Negative Space Movement for local dancers and/or community members. This is taught as an inclusive 2-hour movement class for a wide range of skill levels and abilities

  • A combination of the above
